Joanna Georgiades
The brushed on, poured on smashed on paint, is in such contrast to the porcelain quality of the portrait. that it serves as an act of aesthetic rebellion to highlight the fragility of the icon.
Joanna Georgiades is a London based artist working in portraiture and landscape, she uses gestural and kinetic marks to build a conversation between the brush and the drip creating form from action. Canvases from her studio are reused; she leaves evidence of the previous paintings to build relationships between the planes, with the areas of built up paint being used to define and intimate presence. These elusive forms are worked into ghostly disembodied apparitions that linger between the marks of the paint. These presences are emotively painted with nostalgic allusions and represent influences on her work from music, writing and popular culture.
